ECPS District Closure Information
Big Elk Family:
The next two weeks are busy weeks for our Big Elk Family. Students and parents will be picking up and returning equipment and supplies. Please see our school website for all the latest information from all school sites. We have tried to put all information in one place on our school website - www.elkcityschools.com under COVID-19 District Info. We have updated our FAQ to provide you with the information we currently have. We will provide more as it becomes available. This is a very fluid and dynamic situation; we are receiving new information continually from the Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC). We recommend that you look to these places for the most current information.
Mr. Rick Garrison, Elk City School Superintendent
WHEN DOES DISTANCING LEARNING BEGIN AND END?
Distance learning begins April 6 and will go through May 8.
WHERE CAN WE FIND OUR ASSIGNMENTS?
Teachers will be using Google Classroom to post assignments. There is an app that can be downloaded to cellular devices. 7-12 grade students need to check their school emails multiple times a week. Students will need to check Google Classroom weekly.
Our program will be asynchronous meaning teachers will post lessons weekly (i.e. Monday morning) and students will have until Sunday to complete. That means students do not have set times they must be online. Students can work at their own pace, and with a schedule that is convenient for the entire family.
Teachers will have set times they can be reached through Google Meet or they can be reached through email. Teachers will read and respond to emails daily. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you need something. Teacher emails can be found on the school website.
Codes for Google Classrooms will be available soon on site FAQ documents. Once you get into Classroom there will be a + sign in the upper or lower right. Click on it. Click on join class and then type in code.
WHAT IF I DON’T HAVE A DEVICE?
Elk City School will have Chromebooks for students to check out for use during this time. Because students will not need to be online all day everyday not every student in a household will need a device. We ask that one device be checked out for each household that will need one, and that it be checked out at the site of the oldest student in your house. For example if there is a sophomore, seventh grader and PK student in a house the family will only need to check out one device from the high school.
Check out times will be Friday and are posted in each site's FAQ located on our School Website under the Tab, COVID-19 District Info.
WHAT IF I DON’T HAVE INTERNET ACCESS?
We are in the process of putting mobile hotspots in the student parking lot at the high school; this is the parking lot on the west side of the school, and in the middle school gym parking lot. Students/families could drive to these spots to check email, Google Classroom, etc. and to work on assignments.
Many providers are offering internet service at free or reduced rates right now if you want to look at getting internet at your home. Sparklight (Cableone) is offering low cost plans to families. Sparklight has also opened wifi in the parking lots of all their offices. Spectrum is advertising free internet in some areas. Most providers have waived overage fees or increased data limits temporarily. Check with your provider to see what they are offering.
IS THERE A PAPER OPTION?
Yes, if you would prefer a paper packet instead we will provide one. It can be emailed to you or picked up. Pick-up times are in site FAQs.
If at all possible we do not want the packets back. Students may take pictures of student work and email back to their teacher.
WHAT ABOUT SPECIAL SERVICES?
Our counselors are still available if students need them. Reach out to them through their school email.
Students needing other special services will be contacted by providers.
There are many questions still unanswered and new questions that arise daily. We will provide you with more information as we receive it. We will take our direction from the OSDE and CDC. Follow the OSDE FAQ Document and CDC websites for the most current information.
